While perhaps we didn’t go in as deep as I would have liked with our Skypecast today we did get a couple of good points out which I thought I would share here along with some links.
Promoting your Site
Nothing beats submitting your site to the relevant search engines including Google, which can be done via their webmaster console here, all 3 search engines now use XML based sitemaps as we described here so submitting and keeping them up to date is pretty easy. The next step is to promote your site via directories this blog post from Cornwall SEO has a good list to get you started, I’m sure you can think of more.
We touched on how sites like Digg and blogging has become important though these are enough to fill several entries of their own so I will leave them for the time being.
Forums came up as a good means of promoting yourself particularly if you can find a friendly one like say webdigity.com (note we have added our referral link here but it is a great forum) Finally we covered the use of myspace and trying to gain maximum publicity by using multiple sites which we have discussed before here
The area we didn’t look at was how to Digg and Link baiting is best used I have pulled out two good articles one from Eric Ward and one from search engine guide which can be found here & here.
Promoting yourself
While we didn’t touch on the subject hugely promoting yourself tended to focus on sites like ClaimID and LinkedIn as well as myspace. One part of the discussion was on if it was worth getting the top spot on Google for your personal name, as several guys mentioned for less then £50 most people can pay for higher rankings unless you unfortunate to be called Britney Spears the good news of course is that you have one of the most search for names in the World, bad news you don’t want to even guess the going price to secure top spots with advertisement.
Finally thanks to all the guys who came along those who left there web addresses I have added them to my del.icio.us account and stumbled them for extra publicity, hope to see you at the next one!

This was my first Skypecast and even though there were some technical difficulties, I learned a few things. I also learned of your business (the Skypecast name helped) so you were successful in promoting yourself online! I think, with time, this medium can become a great resource. Thanks and I look forward to your next Skypecast.
